Tragedy in the English Channel – 12 Dead as Migrant Boat Capsizes

Authorities in France report that a boat carrying dozens of migrants overturned, resulting in at least 12 deaths in the English Channel.

According to a statement from the maritime prefecture, the boat was carrying 65 people, according to BFMTV.

Over 50 people were rescued, while 12 people lost their lives.

“Several of them require emergency medical care.”

Olivier Barbarin, “Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open,” stated the mayor of Le Portel. Which is close to the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported that there are still two missing persons and multiple injuries.

This year’s Channel disaster has resulted in the deadliest death toll.

Out of the over 20,000 persons who have successfully crossed the English Channel this year, it now brings the total number of fatalities to at least 37.

Mr. Darmanin posted on X calling the shipwreck in Pas-de-Calais “terrible.”

Emergency services were trying to locate the missing and tend to the injured.

Later on Tuesday, he is anticipated to arrive at the location. Which is close to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

“Catastrophic” is how nearby town Le Portel mayor Olivier Barbarin described the death toll.

“It is a true tragedy.”
