Residents in Derry are at “serious risk” due to the petrol bombs and fireworks that have been thrown at police officers during disturbances.

The PSNI reports that several officers have been injured due to “sporadic disorder” in the city’s Nailors Row neighborhood.

An earlier statement on Saturday evening from a spokesperson stated, “We are working to bring the situation under control and urge people to avoid the area in the meantime.”

They requested parents to “come and bring their children home” in an update.

“During the disturbance in Nailors Row this evening, we have witnessed heavy masonry, petrol bombs and fireworks thrown at the police.” Numerous officers have sustained injuries, according to the spokesperson.

Sandra Duffy, a Sinn Féin councilwoman and former mayor of Strabane and Derry City also pleaded for calmness.

The attacks on police at Bishop Street with petrol bombs are a disgrace and have to end immediately.

The elderly and vulnerable residents of Alexander House should not have this activity taking place right outside their door. So I’m also concerned about them.

These attacks are carried out by also a small group of young people.

Ms. Duffy made a plea to other youth. Warning them against becoming involved in the violence. Because it “may hurt their future.”

“This city is not represented by these senseless acts and they are wrong,” the woman said.

The remarkably positive community events and productive work, that are taking place this week all across the Bogside contrast sharply with them.
