Riot in Cardiff Planned By Far-Right Groups

Belfast Police Called For More Police Force from All around the UK

An anti-fascist organization scheduled a protest for Cardiff today in response to reports that far-right organizations may hold a protest there. On Friday, August 9, counterprotests are being held in Cardiff’s city center in response to unverified rumors, circulating on social media about potential weekend actions in Cardiff, Swansea, Tenby and Aberystwyth.

Over the past 11 days, far-right groups’ violent protests in Plymouth, Belfast, Liverpool, Sunderland and Southport have rocked towns and cities all over the United Kingdom. Many police officers have been hurt and over 500 people have been arrested in connection with disturbances brought on by the riots. Numerous people have already been imprisoned.

The knife attack in Southport which left 10 people critically injured and 3 young girls dead was the spark for the riots.

Although reports, that the same far-right organizations intended to demonstrate in Cardiff. More anti-fascist protestors showed up over the weekend, dispelling the rumors. In contrast to the violent scenes earlier in the week, more nonviolent counterprotests have taken to the streets over the past 48 hours, easing tensions throughout the United Kingdom.

Police started contacting businesses about planned protests in the capital today. Though, following new reports of far-right protests. That are scheduled for this weekend in Aberystwyth, Swansea and Cardiff.

Police in Cardiff have spoken with owners of businesses in the city center regarding scheduled action that is expected to take place at any time today. Friday, August 9 and is thought to be associated with the far-right. Unverified rumors on social media indicate, that this will start close to the Utilita Arena. Though there is no indication that it is connected to the venue. At noon, Stand Up to Racism is organizing a counter-protest.

A protest organized by Stand Up to Racism is scheduled for this Saturday, August 10. Starting at 1 pm at the Nye Bevan statue on Queen Street. It is believed, that this is a continuation of the organization’s national day of protest and is akin to the weekly protests that have been held in Cardiff since October. Cardiff Stop the War, Black Lives Matter Cardiff & Vale and Cymru Students for Palestine are among the other organizations involved.

The police departments of South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed-Powys have acknowledged that they are cognisant of possible protests within their respective jurisdictions. “According to Gwent Police, there is currently no evidence to support any planned disturbance in the area.
