Accused Denied Attempted Murder of Senior Officer at Belfast Crown Court

Attempted Murder of Inspector John Caldwell Court Hearing

Three Londonderry men denied the allegations. That they were involved in an attempted assassination of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

After attending a children’s football practice on February 22, 2023. At a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone. The senior officer managed to survive multiple gunshot wounds.

Four days later, in the Derry neighborhood of Creggan. A piece of paper, bearing an admission of responsibility for the New IRA attack was tacked to a wall.

Caolan Robert Brogan, 24, of Bluebellhill Gardens in Derry, Joseph Anthony Campbell, 23 of Gosheden Cottages and Tiarnan McFadden, 27 of Carnhill appeared in Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday. Which is part of the Royal Courts of Justice.

A document “claiming responsibility” for the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell, and “a threat of future violence, against members of the security forces,” are among the items. That all three deny having and intend to use against terrorism on February 26, 2023.

There is a second charge, against Mr. Campbell and Mr. McFadden for “dissemination of terrorist publications”.

That same day, they were accused of “electronically transmitting the contents of a terrorist publication.” Which was a document that claimed responsibility for the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell and contained. “A threat of future violence against members of the security forces.”

First, to be charged, Mr. McFadden answered “not guilty” to the second offense and Mr. Campbell did the same when he was charged.

The court was informed by Mr. Brogan’s attorney, that his client planned to request the dismissal of the second charge.

Though no trial date was announced. The judge stated he would consider the case in September.
