The Welsh Parliament held a vote, that confirmed Eluned Morgan as the first female first minister of Wales.

After Vaughan Gething resigned, the Senedd called back from summer recess to nominate her.

Virtual participation in the vote allowed for Senedd (MSs) members, including those residing overseas.

Ms. Morgan: “The greatest honor of my life to stand before you today as the first woman to become the first minister of Wales”.

Ms Morgan became Welsh Labour’s leader last month and has served as health minister since May 2021.

She received 28 votes from MSs, 15 from Conservative Andrew RT Davies, and 12 from Plaid Cymru’s Rhun ap Iorwerth.

Her name is now forwarded to the King for final approval.

Mr Gething resigned last month, after the resignation of four members of his cabinet.

During his election campaign, he accepted donations from a man twice convicted of environmental crimes, sparking controversy about his leadership.

The dismissal of one of his cabinet ministers over leaked messages sparked a debate within the party.
