Major internet speed upgrades will be provided to hundreds of thousands of rural homes and businesses that are unable to complete basic online tasks because of antiquated broadband infrastructure. This is part of the UK Government’s efforts to close the digital divide and electrify every region of the country.
Government funding of up to £800 million will be made available to update broadband infrastructure in rural areas of Wales, Scotland and England. This will put an end to the misery of buffering and enable people to do everyday online tasks, like watching films online, making video calls or downloading large files—tasks that are currently particularly difficult in some parts of Scotland and Wales.
Around 312,000 homes and businesses in Great Britain will be able to access gigabit-capable broadband with lightning speed thanks to this agreement. Wales, the area with the lowest proportion of gigabit coverage, will benefit from this program for the first time.
This will finally provide the fastest connection available to people and businesses in rural parts of Britain, including the South Wales Valleys, Exmoor National Park, and the Forest of Bowland. As part of the government’s effort to spark economic growth, this will contribute to increased productivity.
Project Gigabit targets areas that are too expensive for providers to reach in their commercial builds and that would otherwise be left behind with inadequate digital infrastructure. The historic agreement with telecom provider Openreach represents one of the biggest milestones in the rollout of this initiative. Facilitating remote work and drawing in new companies. North and Central Scotland, North and South West Wales, Mid and South Devon, East and South Shropshire, North Herefordshire, North Somerset, Essex, North East England, and Worcestershire are among the regions anticipated to gain from these upcoming contracts.
