After a car lost a tire while driving on the M5, drivers are still waiting in huge lines. According to the police, at approximately 2:25 p.m. (Friday, July 12), a car traveling on the southbound carriageway near Exeter lost a tire and collided with a car traveling on the northbound carriageway.
Both directions of the road were blocked off as emergency personnel, including an air ambulance, raced to the scene.

One southbound lane has reopened, according to the police, but the other lanes are still closed. Serious injuries were sustained by two occupants of the car that struck the tire and were transported to the hospital.
Although an ambulance checked the driver of the car traveling south, he did not need to be taken to the hospital.
“The motorway has been closed in both directions around Junction 29 following a serious collision on the M5 this afternoon,” stated Chief Inspector Simon Jenkinson.
Emergency services’ top priorities are to handle the incident directly and tend to the casualties, making sure they receive timely and proper care.
“We recognize that the road closures cause a significant amount of traffic disruption in the area, but we appreciate your patience while we deal with the incident.
Inquiries will also be carried out at the scene to establish the full circumstances of the incident, and this has to be completed before we can reopen the road.”
In a post on social media, Danes Castle Fire Station thanked the public for helping at the scene of today’s crash:
“We wanted to express our thanks to all of the public members who assisted us at a road traffic collision on the M5 motorway this afternoon.”
“A short distance in front of us, an accident occurred. Green Watch Danes Castle crews were already on the southbound carriageway responding to an earlier incident.
